Pita bread pizzas

Serves 8
Prep time: 5 mins
Cooking time: 5 mins

You can make pita breads into lots of thin, healthy pizza bases. By toasting them first, they become easy to split in two. Top them with your favourite toppings and cheese, then bake to melt the cheese and get a thin, crispy base.

View the method
  1. Briefly toast the pita pockets in a toaster (this will allow you to split them open more easily). Open up so you have 16 halves.
  2. Place pita halves on a baking tray with inside facing up.
  3. Smear pitas with tomato sauce or relish.
  4. Sprinkle with a little grated cheese.
  5. Layer your favourite pizza toppings on top - tomatoes, mushrooms, ham, pepperoni, spinach, jalapenos, pineapple, olives... the possibilities are endless!
  6. Grill in hot oven until cheese is melted and golden.

Tips and FAQs

For an interesting twist, try basil pesto as a base instead of tomato sauce.

Be careful not to load on too many toppings, otherwise the bases may break.

What is the difference between pita dough and pizza dough?
While pita dough contains a lot of the same ingredients as pizza dough, they are two different things. Pita dough is typically made with whole wheat flour, while pizza dough is made with bread flour.

Can you freeze pita pizza?
Yes! You can assemble the pita pizzas and wrap in plastic wrap and freeze (similar to how frozen pizzas are sold at the store). Then, pop into the oven frozen and bake for 2-3 extra minutes for a perfect pizza.
