Recycle Right at Kerbside

From February 1st 2024, what can go into council kerbside recycling became standardized across Aotearoa New Zealand. This makes it easier for us to recycle right. Find out what you can and can't put in.

Accepted Items for Kerbside Recycling:
  • Tins and cans
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Most clean paper, cardboard, and pizza boxes
  • Plastic bottles, trays, and containers labeled with numbers 1, 2, and 5 (without lids)

Recycling Guidelines:
  • Most tins and cans can be placed in your recycling bin.
  • Most glass bottles and jars are accepted.
  • Clean paper, cardboard, and pizza boxes are recyclable.
  • Plastic bottles, trays, and containers labeled 1, 2, and 5 can be recycled (without lids).

Recycling Items Not Accepted at Kerbside:

Items not accepted can be recycled through drop-off locations and take-back schemes.

Importance of Standardizing Recycling:

Standardizing recycling helps divert an additional 36,000 tonnes of waste from landfills annually and facilitates the selection of recyclable packaging by households and businesses.

Standardized Food Scraps and Garden Waste Collections:

Some councils collect food scraps and garden waste, which can be converted into biogas and compost.
Accepted items for these collections include food waste, cut flowers, and garden waste.
