Slow cooked black bean beef

Serves  4
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cooking time:  4 - 5 hours

Who doesn’t love black bean sauce? This Chinese classic is another super simple recipe from our slow cooker range. Prepare your ingredients in advance, then freeze them together until you need them. We recommend buying the sauce premade — it’s easier, healthy and super tasty.

View the method
  1. Place ingredients in a slow cooker with ½ cup water, mix until the liquids are combined, and cook for 4-5 hours on low.
  2. If there is quite a bit of liquid, thicken with 2 Tbsp flour mixed with a small amount of water and stir through, cook on high for 10-15 mins to thicken up. Add more flour/water mix if needed.
  3. Serve your black bean beef with udon noodles and steamed broccoli.

Delicious Chinese-style black bean beef has never been easier. Pop this beef in black bean sauce in the slow cooker just before work and come home to a warm, hearty bowl of goodness. Or, if you’d like to cook it in a wok, freeze the beef, vegetables and sauce ingredients in separate bags.

Tips:

  • Garnish with spring onions once cooked.
  • Your slow cooker is your best friend when it comes to saving money on dinner! Cheaper cuts of meat can be slowly transformed into tender, melt-in-the-mouth chunks and you hardly have to do anything.
  • To save more time - prepare everything over the weekend so all you have to do is defrost your combined ingredients overnight, then throw them in the slow cooker for 4-5 hours on low.
  • You can also chop the broccoli up into small pieces to use it in the stir-fry, instead of steaming it.

FAQs:

Should I stir the casserole in the slow cooker?

Due to the nature of a slow cooker, there is no need to stir the food unless it specifically says so in the recipe.

How long can I leave the casserole in the slow cooker after it has finished?

The general rule of thumb is that 2-4 hours is the maximum length of time you can leave food in a slow cooker after it has finished cooking. After this, it needs to be cooled and transferred into the refrigerator.
