Comparing fresh, frozen, prepackaged and precooked sausages
Sausages can be bought fresh, frozen, loose, prepacked and precooked, which can be a little confusing, so we explain the differences below to help you make the best choice for your needs:
Fresh sausages
Fresh sausages are uncooked and made from fresh meat, fat and spices stuffed into edible casings. You’ll find them prepacked in the chiller section or sold loose at the butchery counter.
Frozen sausages
Frozen sausages are uncooked sausages that have been frozen to preserve the freshness, quality, tenderness and juiciness. These are perfect for popping into your home freezer until you are ready to cook them.
Prepacked sausages
Prepacked sausages are one of the fastest-growing categories as we seek out more interesting flavour combinations to add interest to our meals. New Zealand has some wonderfully innovative sausage producers adding variety to our dinner plates with creative flavour combinations such as pork and cress, chicken with tarragon and venison and chilli. You’ll find these sold in packs of 5 or 6 in the chiller section of your supermarket.
Precooked sausages
Precooked sausages are the ultimate in convenience combining a quick-to-cook sausage with a longer shelf life. Saveloys, frankfurters, hot dogs, sizzlers and cheerios are all examples of precooked sausages that are quick to reheat. You’ll find them in the chiller section and the freezer of your local supermarket.
